In an emergency event involving a U.S. citizen during business hours, contact the American Citizen Services (ACS) unit at +251 11130 7016.  For after-hours emergencies, call the U.S. Embassy’s main switchboard at +251 11130 6000

Emergencies for which you should contact the embassy include:

  • Arrests
  • Hospitalizations
  • Welfare and Whereabouts requests
  • Deaths
  • Child Custody disputes
  • Repatriations
  • Lost/Stolen Passports

If you have a question about non-emergency services for U.S. citizens, please send an email to the ACS unit at addisacs@state.gov. This email should include the Full Name of the U.S. citizen(s), their passport number(s), phone number(s), and a description of the issue. The ACS unit will respond to your email inquiry within two business days.
