Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Unrest in Oromia

The U.S. Embassy continues to monitor reports of sporadic violence and protests that have materialized with little to no prior notice in the Oromia region. In light of the security situation in the region, highlighted by armed clashes near the border region between the Somali and Oromia regional states, the Embassy is reviewing and approving on a case by case basis  all personal and official travel to East and West Hararge, Borena, and Guji areas of Oromia regional state.

The U.S. Embassy recommends U.S. citizens carefully consider travel to Oromia at this time.

The Embassy reminds U.S. citizens in Ethiopia to increase their level of situational awareness, continuously assess their surroundings, and evaluate their personal level of safety and avoid demonstrations or large gatherings.

Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.  Avoid areas where demonstrations are taking place and exercise caution when in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.
