Security Alert: Update on Security Situation in Amhara, Afar and Tigray Regions

The U.S. Embassy continues to closely track developments in northern Ethiopia and is aware of intensified fighting in the Amhara region, including around Dessie and Kombolcha. U.S. citizens in Amhara and Afar should monitor local media, be prepared to shelter in place if they are near areas of conflict and should strongly consider departing these areas.

As previously communicated, the Tigray region does not have reliable communications connectivity. Basic services and essential items such as food, fuel and money remain limited. Mobility in the region is restricted and the U.S. Embassy is unable to contact American citizens in Tigray.

If you are a U.S. citizen, or if you have a U.S. citizen family member, in one of these conflict areas please contact us immediately at AddisACS@state.gov<mailto:AddisACS@state.gov> with the following information:

  1. U.S. citizen’s full name and date of birth;
  2. The U.S. citizen’s U.S. passport number, if known;
  3. The U.S. citizen’s last known location and contact information

Please also refer to our Travel Advisory issued on September 16, 2021 which recommends that U.S. citizens reconsider travel to Ethiopia.
