Addis Ababa, October 25, 2023 – Safe food is everyone’s business.  That’s why the Business Drivers for Food Safety, funded by USAID and implemented by Food Enterprise Solutions in collaboration with the Ethiopian Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration, held a Food Safety Workshop at the Skylight Hotel.  The Food Safety Workshop addressed the need for improved food handling practices among small and medium food businesses, to ensure the production and distribution of safe, high-quality food products in Ethiopia.

The workshop covered a range of topics, including hygiene practices, quality control, supply chain documentation, and compliance with regulatory standards.  Participants engaged in hands-on workshops to identify challenges in food safety management and implementation.  The event provided networking opportunities for local businesses, government officials, industry leaders, and food safety professionals, and encouraged collaboration and knowledge sharing.  Attendees received materials and toolkits to implement food safety measures in their businesses.

The collaborative effort between USAID’s Business Drivers for Food Safety and the Ethiopian Ministry of Trade underscores the U.S. and Ethiopian governments’ shared commitment to elevating Ethiopia’s food safety standards and developing a sustainable food industry.

“We are excited to co-host this workshop with the Ethiopian Ministry of Trade, as it represents a significant step towards ensuring the safety and quality of food products in Ethiopia,” said Aschalew Wondie, Country Director for Business Drivers for Food Safety. “By providing local food businesses with the knowledge and tools they need to improve their food handling practices, we aim to boost consumer confidence, support economic growth, and contribute to the overall well-being of the nation.”
