Alert: Civil Unrest in Jijiga

Location: Jijiga, Ethiopia

Event: Ethiopia’s National Defense Force has seized control of key highways, government buildings, and the airport in Jijiga, capital of Ethiopia’s Somali region, media report. According to media reports, churches, businesses, houses, and cars throughout the area have come under attack, as have Amhara and Oromo minority groups.

No U.S. Embassy personnel are in the area and will avoid the area while events unfold in Jijiga. Americans who find themselves in the Jijiga area should shelter in place and pay attention to local news reports as the situation develops.

· Avoid large crowds and demonstrations

· Be aware of your surroundings.

· Keep a low profile.
